Online Child Trafficking in South Africa

The minister of police in South Africa, Bheki Cele, has revealed that social media platforms like Facebook are being used to sell children in the country. Cele disclosed that the police were alerted to the issue in November 2020 after discovering parents advertising their children on various social media platforms.

However, the country’s crime intelligence lacks the resources to tackle the problem, although they are in the process of acquiring social media monitoring solutions. While the issue of child trafficking through social media persists, the Ministry of social development is taking some measures to address it.

According to Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, they are monitoring social media platforms and training relevant stakeholders to combat the issue.
